Controlled Substances Oversight in Nonclinical Research (DEA)

We provide guidance and support for nonclinical research for those working with controlled substances to ensure compliance with federal regulations and promote safe and effective research practices.

To conduct research at the Unversity of Miami involving any Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Controlled Substance in a non-clinical setting (preclinical studies/laboratory research with or without animals), principal investigators (PIs) conducting research must either obtain these drugs:

  • The Division Of Veterinary Resources using the University License (for in vivo research only)
  • Principal Investigators (PIs) can obtain their own DEA research license under their name to work with controlled substances.  The latter assume a critical role in ensuring the legal and safe management of these materials. Their responsibilities span every aspect of procurement, storage, documentation, and disposal, with compliance being mandatory to protect both research integrity and institutional reputation.
  • In some circustances, registration is not required for the drugs which must meet certain criteria to be exempt from the application on all or any part of the Controlled Substances Act.  Contact the UM DEA office for more regarding this process.

We provide guidelines for investigators for compliance, security, and institutional support.
