Embryonic Stem Cell Research Oversight Committee (ESCRO)

The University of Miami Embryonic Stem Cell Research Oversight Committee (ESCRO) provides ongoing oversight of research activities to ensure that faculty and staff comply with federal and state guidelines concerning the use of human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) and human somatic cell nuclear transfer (hSCNT).  The ESCRO Committee aligns its practices with the ISSCR Guidelines for Stem Cell Research and Clinical Translation, which emphasize:

  • Scientific Justification: All hESC and embryo-related research must demonstrate clear scientific merit and undergo rigorous ethical review.
  • Oversight Mechanisms: Research involving stem cell-derived embryo models (SCBEMs) must have defined endpoints and be subject to appropriate institutional oversight.
  • Animal Host Research: Transfer of human stem cells into animal CNS requires review by animal research committees supplemented with stem cell expertise.
  • Ethical Principles: The guidelines promote transparency, public trust, and adherence to ethical boundaries across international contexts.

The Embryonic Stem Cell Research Oversight (ESCRO) Committee at the University of Miami is composed of a diverse group of faculty and subject matter experts in biology, stem cell research, genetics, bioethics, and law. These members reflect a multidisciplinary team with expertise in clinical research, stem cell biology, and regulatory affairs.

The Committee meets as needed.
