2024 Research Administrative Symposium

On September 9, 2024, the Office of the Vice Provost for Research and Scholarship hosted its annual Research Administrative Symposium at the Newman Alumni Center on the Coral Gables campus. The half-day event brought together research administrators from across the University of Miami for an afternoon of learning, collaboration, and professional development.

This year’s symposium focused on compliance, innovation, and operational excellence, showcasing the evolving landscape of research administration and the critical role administrators play in supporting ethical and impactful research.

Event Highlights:

  • Opening Remarks by Maria L. Alcaide, M.D., Vice Provost for Research & Scholarship
Stephen Nimer, M.D., Executive Dean for Research, Miller School of Medicine
  • Networking Session with refreshments and informal engagement
  • A robust lineup of concurrent sessions that explored key areas shaping research operations at UM. Topics ranged from federal compliance updates and system upgrades to research security and export controls. Attendees gained practical insights into multicenter trial coordination through CRMSO, clarified distinctions between research and service contracts, and learned about evolving trends in data retention, intellectual property, and indirect cost rate negotiations. The sessions reflected UM’s commitment to empowering administrators with the tools and knowledge to support ethical, efficient, and globally engaged research.
