Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC)

The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is a federally mandated committee that oversees our institution’s animal program, facilities, and procedures. It provides a framework for compliance with federal policies, guidelines, and principles related to the use of animals in research, teaching and testing.  

United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Public Health Service (PHS) require institutions using animals to appoint an IACUC and charge it with specific responsibilities.  

University of Miami’s IACUC is comprised of veterinarians, researchers, and representatives of the public. The committee’s composition is designed by regulation to encompass a broad base of relevant knowledge and to represent both scientific and non-scientific interests. IACUC members are appointed by the Institutional Official (IO), a role currently held by the Vice Provost of Research and Scholarship.

  • Review and approve animal use protocols involving live vertebrate animals  
  • Provide training and education to researchers and staff on proper animal care and use 
  • Conduct semi-annual inspections of animal housing and use facilities and laboratories 
  • Conduct Post Approval monitoring (PAM) of animal care and use program to ensure compliance and adherence to best practices, such as those outlined in The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.  
  • Investigate concerns raised by faculty and staff regarding the humane care and use of lab animals. 
  • Semi-annual review of the University’s animal program
