Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC)

The Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) is a panel of subject matter experts responsible for reviewing and approving research protocols that involve potentially hazardous biological materials, including recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid (r/sNA) molecules such as those used in genetic modification. The IBC’s primary mission is to safeguard human health, the public, and the environment by ensuring that all laboratory research and teaching activities are conducted in accordance with federal, state, and institutional regulations. 

At the University of Miami, the IBC provides oversight for research involving recombinant/synthetic nucleic acid molecules,  bacteria,  viruses and toxins including Select Agents. All activities must comply with the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant DNA Molecules, the CDC/NIH Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL), and the university’s own biosafety policies. 

Principal Investigators (PIs) are responsible for ensuring that their research adheres to all applicable safety standards and regulatory requirements. This includes proper training of laboratory personnel, maintaining accurate documentation (e.g., SOPs, permits), and enforcing IBC rulings within their labs.
