DEA Guidance for Nonclinical Research

We provide guidance and support for nonclinical research for those working with controlled substances to ensure compliance with federal regulations and promote safe and effective research practices.

For animal research, investigators can order the drugs through the Division of Veterinary Resources (DVR) via the University of Miami research license (Schedule II-V controlled substances). For researchers who require Schedule I substances for animal work and/or those needing controlled substances in nonclinical in vitro research, investigators must obtain their own DEA research license. Each have their own processes which are described below.
