Facilities and Administrative (F&A) Rates and Space Survey

The Cost Analysis Team oversees the preparation and negotiation of the University of Miami’s Facilities and Administrative (F&A) rates, which reimburse the University for shared costs—such as infrastructure, central services, and utilities—that cannot be directly assigned to specific projects. F&A rates, also called indirect cost rates, are calculated as a percentage of direct project costs and directly support sponsored research.

A key driver of the F&A rate is the space utilization survey, which determines how major facility costs—like depreciation, interest, and operations and maintenance—are allocated across functions such as instruction and organized research. Accurate assignment of each room’s use is critical to ensuring proper rate calculation.
