Welcome to the University of Miami Research Security Program
At the University of Miami, we are committed to advancing research and scholarship that are innovative, impactful, collaborative, and conducted with the highest standards of integrity. As Interim Vice Provost for Research & Scholarship, I am pleased to support the development of our Research Security Program as an important part of strengthening and safeguarding the University’s research enterprise.
Research security is essential to preserving the integrity of our scholarly work while promoting responsible global engagement. It encompasses a range of important areas, including disclosure, research-related cybersecurity, international collaboration, export control, and evolving federal requirements. Through this program, we aim to provide our faculty, staff, students, and research administrators with the guidance, resources, and support needed to navigate this landscape thoughtfully and successfully.
We view research security as a shared institutional responsibility and a critical component of maintaining public trust, protecting research assets, and ensuring that the University of Miami remains a place where discovery can thrive in an environment that is both open and secure. This website will serve as a central resource for information, training, updates, and support as our program continues to grow and evolve.
I invite you to explore these resources and join us in advancing a research enterprise that reflects the excellence, responsibility, and global engagement that define the University of Miami.
Alberto J. Caban-Martinez, DO, PhD, MPHThe University of Miami's Research Security Program (RSP) is designed to safeguard the integrity and security of our faculty, staff, trainees and research activities. The RSP provides comprehensive guidelines, resources, and training materials to support our researchers in maintaining the highest standards of research security, encouraging foreign engagement and compliance while avoiding foreign influence.
Our program covers essential topics of Cybersecurity, Foreign Travel Security, Research Security Training, and Export Control. Each described in detail in "policies and Guidance" below. By participating in the RSP, the university community and its stakeholders will be equipped with the knowledge and tools needed to protect University research and contribute to the university's commitment to excellence and integrity.
Ensuring the safety and integrity of research involves raising awareness about potential domestic and international threats and establishing protocols and safeguards to mitigate those risks. UM’s RSP in the Office of the Vice-Provost for Research + Scholarship also adheres to the guidelines outlined in National Security Presidential Memorandum-33, which are mandatory for federal research funding recipients. As new resources become available, this webpage will be regularly updated.
